Alonso 'understands' Renault decision

Sunday 8th November 2009

Fernando Alonso says he fully understands Renault's decision to stop development on this year's car midway through the season.

After finishing 2008 on a high which included back-to-back race wins for the Spaniard, much was expected from the French manufacturer this year.

However, things didn't go their way at the start of the 2009 and they soon decided to switch their focus to next year's challenger.

"Next year is more or less the same in terms of aerodynamics, so for sure what you did this year could help, but I think with the narrow front tyres, with the big fuel tanks, the cars will have to change and we'll have to prepare the cars in a different way for the fuel loads," Alonso said.

"Until the first race next year we will not know [if it paid off].

"Renault stopped developing earlier and I perfectly understand the decision.

"Hopefully they can have a good car next year."
